We Do More Than Hope

someday soon

like the memorials

romanticizing evil

that we discarded

in better times

to the pit of ignominy

the ballroom will be emptied

of its faux gold

the arch will be

rededicated to failure

and your name

will be erased

from each dollar bill

and every other

object on the planet

or in the outer

reaches of space

that it now disgraces

for sure a few

acolytes and fools

will gainsay the cleansing

demand your resurrection

but you were no christ

flounder they will

fail as you did

rotted and soiled

scattering like

seeds in the wind

after their final

homage in a

nearly empty arena

to your corruption

and hidden crimes

strong women and men

will hold the nation

guided by light from

the flame of

democracy’s torch

and the collective

consciousness

washed free from guilt

for all eternity awake

will revile at what you did

repulsed by

the few remaining

images of

nero

caligula

hitler

the slug jabba

and you
