A Few Sweet Moments in Between

children over eons

relearn again

thru play a world

they don't remember

today they color

in the care of day

blurring the lines

between what appears

to be here and what

they are here to imagine

 

better we are for

this cycle of forgetting

and discovering

that is creation

 

after two days of soaking rain

that harbingers a vibrant autumn

the lingering monarchs with

their marvelous orange wings

masking their understated

determination move through

the attentive listening air

with a purpose accentuated

by dwindling numbers

sip sugar from the last

flourish of summer flowers

before their long migration

 

each butterfly to

its singular mission

without destroying

what remains of

the darkening planet

 

bequeathing to us

the faint hope

of witnessing their return

in a summer of

this life or another

 

where everything is

made up together

with every other
