When He’s Gone

late august

another abundant

rain is falling

enough glistens

and reflects how

the anxiety of

plants has ended

for the summer

the pastures

sigh to the

cattle now

let come

old friends

what comes

before winter

trees intent

upon forever

deepen

their roots

prepare for

rest in uneven

weather

the eternal

grasses imagine

in their auburn color

the freshening

of lambs and

calves and fawns

seeds sprouting

where they've fallen

and a world perhaps

waking renewed

in the apparent

hues of a

gentler season
