I Prayed
i prayed they would
never let loose
these weapons of finality
but now that day
of reckoning
seems fast upon us
surely in the face
of this calamity
it is mere folly
wishful thinking
to fill your larders
with canned food
buy your guns and ammo
wrap your children
in the blanket of your love
as warmly and as tenderly
as you are able
so they don't know the dread
the long sorrow
of these final hours
on death row
and when the missiles fly
let kindness quickly
slay the dogs
to spare them
the slow misery
that will surely follow
who can believe it has come
to this gross miscalculation
for those who have the most to lose
should never put the ultimatum
to others who have less to reassemble
in the face of our mutual devastation
open your eyes and see the fools
we have entrusted with the planet
watch how the oligarchs abandon us
how the senators flounder and
the elected representatives cower
how the clown prince
and his media enablers blunder
but if there is blame to place
blame truly lies with us
in our tolerance for rapacious greed
and manifest incompetence in rulers
what should be measured in millimeters
now extends for miles
rightly you inquire
who am i to ring this bell
you are justified to ask
well in your rights perhaps
even to look past
so heed what words you may
surrender once more to dreams
to what comfort you find in sleep
but do not expect to wake
to the same world tomorrow
