Step Dance
these phrases
so easy to shout
so quick to bark
so purposeful
to spit from the lips
with their friggin'
countless so many
damn tedious steps
following after
these words
carving the
long path
to the finish
even with the most
determined
accomplished
initial utterance
. . . repair the latch . . . take out the
trash . . . trim the hedges . . . weed
the garden . . . clean the pond . . .
change the tire . . . shovel the driveway
and the walk . . . fill the shakers with
pepper and salt . . . mow the grass . . .
getting them done often being one
unanticipated annoyance
ruffling spill and interruption
after another
so why is it then
such a smooth
endless freefall
through the night
through the dark
tumbling into the
light past all thought
wrapped in what
the body clings to
when there is so
much tangible and
amorphous left to do
when the soul warns you
about the infinitely
complex and eternal
when you mean it
when you feel it
after you whisper
to that one someone
i love you
